The Top Moments From Inside Paris Fashion Week
Image
After eight days of shows in the City of Light, Paris Fashion Week has come to a close.

Lithuanian designer Juozas Statkevičius brought the wow factor with his collection of well-tailored and magnifying pieces, as both Statkevičius and designer Tony Ward took inspiration from cinema history this season. Wild Rose & Sparrow held a ballet-core-themed show at the Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell; with risqué silhouettes, the brand’s co-founder Ariana Dancu wanted to create a collection inspired by female confidence and self-expression.

Christian Siriano’s leather looks are to-die-for after coming off the New York Fashion Week runway, Chloé bohemian inspired collection is oh-so-dreamy, and Casablanca’s luxury street style collection inspired by countercultural Los Angeles is original. And let’s not lose sight of Kilian Paris’ newest fragrance launch of “Old Fashioned,” with Emily in Paris’ Lucien Laviscount as its face — the smoothest cocktail-esque perfume you’ll ever smell.

Madonna’s Height Revelation: Feeling Like a ‘Shrimp’ in a World of Giants
Image
Madonna, the iconic “Queen of Pop,” stands at a height of 5ft 3 ¼ inches (160.7 cm) with a peak height of 5ft 4 inches (162.6 cm).

At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 19, singer Madonna, whose peak height was 5ft 4 inches (162.6 cm), stood at 5ft 3 ¼ inches (160.7 cm) as she posed in the press room (Credit: Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock)

The Impact of Height in Celebrity Self-Perception: Madonna’s Perspective

She once mentioned feeling like a “shrimp” in an interview due to her height, although she believed it was average. For context, the average American woman typically has a height of around 5 feet 4 inches.

I’ve always wanted to be taller. I feel like a shrimp, but that’s the way it goes. I’m five-foot four-and-a-half-inches – that’s actually average. Everything about me is average. Everything’s normal, in the books. It’s the things inside me that make me not average.

Image
Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan’s upcoming play Patriots.

The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.

The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.

Gillian Anderson
The 15 Best TV Performances of 2017 (So Far)
Gillian Anderson
While storytelling is something we value deeply in the shows we watch, we often look to the key actors of these narratives as one of their ultimate signs of success. Some of our favorite shows thus far this year have owed so much to some staggering acting work. With two inevitable exceptions, we limited this overview to one performance per show, one role per actor. But there was some incredible range to be found in that work, which makes us excited for what the rest of 2017 has in store.

The way that Gillian Anderson, a pop culture icon in her own right, managed to embody famous figures like David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe went well beyond imitation. Each vision we got of Media left us chilled and unsettled thanks to Anderson’s mastery over her gift, building...

Alexander the Great and Judy the Greatest
On this day in history as it relates to the movies...

323 BC Alexander the Great dies of an unknown illness. Colin Farrell plays him in a movie centuries and centuries later and it's suggested that it's a combo of Typhus, Bad Wigs, and Loving Jared Leto that does him in. Who could survive that combo? (Remember when Baz Luhrmann was going to make an Alexander movie, too, but Oliver Stone beat him to it? We wish it had been the other way around.)

38 Ad Julia Drusilla dies in Rome. In the infamous Bob Guccione movie Caligula (1979) her brother Caligula (Malcom McDowell) is shown licking her corpse. Somehow that's not remotely the most perverted thing in the movie!

1692 Bridget Bishop is executed for "Detestable Arts called Witchcraft & Sorceries." She's the first victim of the notorious Salem Witch Trials that will claim many lives and inspire many works of art including The...

Jason Momoa Travels Sundance’s “Red Road” Plus the Return of “Vikings” and “Portlandia”
News

The Arsenio Hall Show has been renewed for a second season.

Justin Hartley has joined the cast of the ABC comedy pilot Damaged Goods. The pilot, from Awkward. creator Lauren Iungerich, is a relationship comedy about two damaged men and two damaged women with Hartley playing a man who can’t handle his girlfriend getting the promotion he was pursuing. I think I prefer to see him playing a guy who is dating an tech billionaire with a vengeful pal.

In a sadly unsurprising development, the Biography channel is revamping into Fyi Network, which will feature upscale lifestyle programming.

What was your favorite scene or quote from "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"?

Jim: I liked Eli and Olivia talking in her office. They both were putting on super-fake facial expressions to keep the outside audience from having any idea of what they were saying. Both clever and creepy!

Deadline reports that NBC is developing a sequel series to Remington Steele, which would follow Olivia Holt, Remington and Laura‘s daughter, as she reopens the Remington Steele Detective Agency. This version is planned as a half-hour comedy but promises a similar mix of comedy, romance and mystery.

After two episodes, CBS has cancelled We Are Men. 2 Broke Girls, which has seen ratings dive this season, will move in its place. A Big Bang Theory repeat will function as a lead-in to Mom until November, when Mike & Molly returns to the schedule.

TV on Tap: Dallas Roberts Returns to "The Good Wife," NBC Exiles "Smash" and Jonathan Del Arco is a "Major Crimes" Regular
It's a peek at what could have been when The Office goes to "The Farm".

News

I'm just thrilled at the news that Jonathan Del Arco has been promoted to a series regular for the second season of Major Crimes. Dr. Morales has been way too much fun for the little screen time he's gotten, so I've been hoping this would happen.

Last night, Ed Schultz announced that his show is moving to a two-hour weekend time slot next month, which opens up a major prime time slot on the news channel. If I'm reading the New York Times' item correctly, the new prime time host could be announced later this morning, with Chris Hayes, Ezra Klein and Joy Reid mentioned as front runners. That might explain why Klein has been making so many guest-hosting appearances lately.

Ausiello: As the look on GHo’s face at the conclusion of Monday’s episode all but confirmed, that ship has sailed. House’s priority now is prolonging his Bff’s life — an arduous task that dominates much of next week’s unbelievably moving hour. A key component of the mission involves Greek‘s Jacob “Rusty” Zachar,...

Best. Gay. Week. Ever! Princess Boy to the Rescue!
Well, It Was That Kind Of Best.Gay.Week.Ever!

I have to confess that when I sat down to write last week's Bgwe! column, it was a little hard to focus on the "Best" part of the equation. What with all of the news about gay teen suicides along with the usual doses of homophobia and asshattery, it was hard to be in a good mood. But I managed to avoid being unduly negative and focused on the good stuff.

But at least it seemed like there were some actual positive changes coming out of the terrible tragedies of Tyler Clementi and the other gay teens we've lost recently. Unfortunately, we then we learned about the horrific beating and torture of three gay men in New York. And that was followed by this horrible video (actually filmed four years ago) of the New York Yankee fans known as the...

Best. Gay. Week. Ever! Will the Real "Glee" Stand Up? Is "Brothers & Sisters" Back?
This Is Still CBS. So Let's Not Get Carried Away...

I know we're only a couple of weeks into the fall television season, but it seems like there is already a fair bit to say about what is working ... and what isn't.

First the bad news for the two of you watching ABC's The Whole Truth. While it won't be the first show to get canceled (hello, Lone Star and My Generation!) it looks pretty well doomed. Which is a shame as Alejo (Anthony Ruviviar) is pretty great and last week's episode not only featured a funny moment in a strip club where he made it very clear he wasn't interested in the ladies shaking their bon-bons, but the episode also frequently referenced the fact Alejo is gay in completely casual ways. It truly seems like a shame we're never going to get to see where this character might have gone.

Best. Gay. Week. Ever! Check Out the First Pic of Cheyenne Jackson on "Glee!"
It's Cheyenne On Glee! Squeeeee!

I thought I'd start of this week's column with some fun new pics I found recently!

First, I've got the exclusive first look at Cheyenne Jackson's first appearance on Glee as Will Schuester's new rival Dustin Goulsby.

Don't you love a man in black!

Adam Rose/Fox

In case you don't remember, last month Glee creator Ryan Murphy told me that Jackson "...is going to sing. He is going to dance, of course. He is the new coach of Vocal Adrenaline. He’s a complete villain. He wears all black. He’s a handsome, villain who will become very intertwined in Will’s life."

And we can't wait for Cheyenne's appearance on Tuesday's ep!

Speaking of things I can't wait for is new Torchwood miniseries (Ha! Whoever threw the rotten cabbage at me missed!) so to tide us over are two new pics I spotted of John Barrowman.

SAG Awards: Female Actor in a Drama Series
Patricia Arquette, 'Medium'Howard Hawks once said that a movie is "three great scenes and no bad ones." A good performance is a similar thing: Nail the important scenes and don't bomb the rest. A great performance, however, is found in the details.Allison Dubois is a wife and mother, as well as a psychic working with the Phoenix district attorney's office. Patricia Arquette plays not only these roles but also the spaces in between. Allison must remain confident in and dedicated to her ability, so as to withstand the skeptics, yet she also has doubts about the wisdom of her role. As a woman raising three daughters, she knows the immense danger she puts her family in and yet feels a calling to help that cannot be ignored. We may not all commune with ghosts and solve mysteries, but Allison's dilemmas are recognizable to anyone.Procedurals will...

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 23, 2009)
Adam Lambert (Sort Of) Kissed A Girl ... And No One Could Stop Talking About It

The big gay news of the week is that one big gay icon did something not so gay and set the gay blogosphere abuzz. That's right, Adam Lambert posed for some racy pictures with a nekkid girl and the reaction of our readers was all over the place as demonstrated by the nearly 70 comments folks posted. Our follow-up poll the next day registered nearly 2,000 votes and generated another 50+ comments.

As for the poll results — it was a dead heat with 41% of folks loving the pics and 41% saying "Ew" and believing that someone was trying to give Adam a "hetero" make-over. I'll say one thing; you folks had a ton of passionate, mostly articulate things to say about the topic.

Personally, I see the whole issue as being a nice little zeitgeist-y moment in how we...

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (September 25, 2009)
File this one under "Thanks for nothing, Shrub." That would be the really bulging file I keep on my desk. So what's the issue?

This week Huffington Post blogger Ryan Grim reported that a new book coming out about President George Bush includes the fact that Bush declined to denounce same-sex marriage in his commencement speech at Furman University in 2008 because he wasn't "...going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can't get married."

No, he was just going to get elected by demonizing the gay kid, and every other 'mo in the country, by allowing henchman Karl Rove to orchestrate two of the most anti-gay presidential campaigns ever run in the U.S. Two campaigns the fueled a wave of constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage across America.

But, hey, Bush wouldn't actually deliver the bad news to the gay college kid himself because he's such a stand up guy.

Ask the Flying Monkey! (April 22, 2009)
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Groeten (i.e. “Greetings!”): Ever since I started to watch The Oc, I was instantly smitten by the hotness that is Benjamin McKenzie. What I was wondering is: what is his stance towards the Glbt community and gay people/fans in general? -- Kevin, Belgium P.S: If you happen to have a super-special Flying Monkey magic spell to have him turn gay and fall madly in love with me, I wouldn't mind!

Ben McKenzie

A: In fact, Benjamin McKenzie already has a gay partner … in his role as a cop on the new NBC show Southland where his cop-partner is a very un-stereotypical gay man.

What does he think of gay folks in real life? Well, the Flying Monkey was a little reluctant to contact Benjamin and ask,...
